CAREERS IN THE TRADE
By the Ironsmith Fire Engineering Team · Memphis, Nashville, Orlando, Houston
A sprinkler fitter salary is the pay earned by the tradespeople who install, inspect and service fire sprinkler systems. The federal government doesn’t track sprinkler fitters on their own. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts them inside plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, where the national median was $63,800 a year, or $30.67 an hour, in May 2025. State medians in May 2025 were $58,600 in Tennessee, $52,910 in Florida and $59,840 in Texas.
Quick facts
- No separate federal number. BLS groups sprinkler fitters with plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters under one code, SOC 47-2152. Every figure here is for that whole group.
- National median, May 2025. $63,800 a year, $30.67 an hour.
- The spread is wide. Nationally, the bottom 10 percent earned under $44,150 and the top 10 percent earned over $108,420 in May 2025.
- Texas led our three states. Median of $59,840 in May 2025, with Houston at $61,300.
- Tennessee was close behind. Median of $58,600 in May 2025. Nashville came in at $60,100 and Memphis at $58,690.
- Florida ran lowest of the three. Median of $52,910 in May 2025, with Orlando at $55,380.
- You get paid to learn. Most people enter through a paid 4 or 5 year apprenticeship. No college degree required.
Sprinkler fitter salary: what the numbers can and can’t tell you
If you’re thinking about this trade, pay is a fair first question. Here’s the honest answer, with the sources on the table.
Search “sprinkler fitter salary” and you’ll find a dozen numbers. Most come from job boards that average whatever postings they scraped that week. We don’t use those. This post uses one source: the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey, the May 2025 release. It’s the same federal data that feeds the Labor Department’s career tools.
There’s one catch, and you should know it up front. BLS doesn’t break out sprinkler fitters. They’re counted with plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters under SOC 47-2152. So the medians below describe a bigger group of pipe trades, and sprinkler fitters are one slice of it. Treat them as the neighborhood, not the exact address.
Here’s what we’ll cover: the national picture, Tennessee, Florida and Texas, a side by side table, and the things that move your pay up over a career.
The national picture
In May 2025, the median wage for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters was $63,800 a year, or $30.67 an hour. Half earned more, half earned less.
The range is what matters more. The lowest 10 percent earned under $44,150. The highest 10 percent earned over $108,420. That gap comes down to experience, specialty, location and hours.
BLS also projects employment in this group to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, which it calls much faster than average, with about 42,000 openings a year. It names fire suppression directly: building codes in every state require these systems, and that keeps sprinkler fitters in demand.
Sprinkler fitter pay in Tennessee
In May 2025, the Tennessee median for SOC 47-2152 was $58,600 a year, or $28.17 an hour. The bottom 10 percent earned under $38,520 and the top 10 percent earned over $82,020.
Nashville
The Nashville metro median was $60,100 a year, or $28.90 an hour, in May 2025. That’s the highest of the Tennessee metros in this post. The low end of the range was higher here too, at $42,650.
Memphis
The Memphis metro median was $58,690 a year, or $28.22 an hour, in May 2025, right on the state number. BLS defines this metro across Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, so it counts workers on both sides of the river.
Sprinkler fitter pay in Florida
In May 2025, the Florida median was $52,910 a year, or $25.44 an hour. The bottom 10 percent earned under $38,940 and the top 10 percent earned over $73,610.
Florida’s median is the lowest of the three states here. Its range is also the narrowest, top to bottom, so fewer people sit far from the middle.
Orlando
The Orlando metro median was $55,380 a year, or $26.62 an hour, in May 2025, about $2,500 above the state median. The top 10 percent earned over $72,950.
Sprinkler fitter pay in Texas
In May 2025, the Texas median was $59,840 a year, or $28.77 an hour. The bottom 10 percent earned under $38,270 and the top 10 percent earned over $81,890.
Houston
The Houston metro median was $61,300 a year, or $29.47 an hour, in May 2025. It’s the highest median of any metro in this post. The top 10 percent in Houston earned over $85,680.

All figures are BLS OEWS, May 2025, for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters. Sprinkler fitters are included in this group, not reported separately.
| Area | Median hourly | Median annual | Bottom 10% earned under | Top 10% earned over |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $30.67 | $63,800 | $44,150 | $108,420 |
| Tennessee | $28.17 | $58,600 | $38,520 | $82,020 |
| Memphis metro (TN-MS-AR) | $28.22 | $58,690 | $37,530 | $82,020 |
| Nashville metro | $28.90 | $60,100 | $42,650 | $83,670 |
| Florida | $25.44 | $52,910 | $38,940 | $73,610 |
| Orlando metro | $26.62 | $55,380 | $39,900 | $72,950 |
| Texas | $28.77 | $59,840 | $38,270 | $81,890 |
| Houston metro | $29.47 | $61,300 | $39,920 | $85,680 |
All three states sit below the national median. The national number includes high-wage states, so the state and metro rows are the better guide to what you’d earn where you live.
What moves a sprinkler fitter’s pay
A median is a midpoint. Where you land depends on choices you make over years. None of these come with a promised number, but they’re the levers.
Finishing your apprenticeship
Most fitters learn the trade in a paid apprenticeship. BLS says most in this group train for 4 or 5 years, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training a year plus classroom work. Raises come as you hit milestones. The UA Sprinkler Fitters Local 669 program, for example, runs five years and reviews apprentices for a raise every six months. Topping out as a journeyman is the single biggest step in most careers.
Union or merit shop
Both paths exist. Local 669 is the union route for sprinkler fitters across most of the country. On the merit-shop side, the American Fire Sprinkler Association runs a four-level apprentice program built with NCCER, and some Associated Builders and Contractors chapters run sprinkler fitter apprenticeships too. Pay scales, benefits and how raises work differ by path, so ask about all three before you sign.
NICET certification
NICET certifies inspection and testing techs in three levels, from Level I work under direct supervision up to Level III, where you run complex jobs and train others. It’s renewed every three years. Each level shows an employer you can carry more of the work, and that’s what moves pay.
Licensing and specialty
Licensing rules vary by state. Some trades in this group need a license to work on their own. Specialties matter too: installation, inspection and testing, service, layout and design each pay differently.
Overtime and travel
Construction schedules don’t always fit 40 hours. Overtime can push annual pay well past the hourly math. Road work, where crews travel to jobs out of town, can add more. It isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine.
Here’s why the trade is worth a look
The pay is solid for a job that doesn’t require a degree. BLS lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry point, and you’re paid from your first day of training. Codes keep the work coming. Every sprinkler system that goes in has to be inspected and tested for its whole life.

At Ironsmith Fire, fitters see a system from install through inspection, testing and service. Customers get one call, one accountable team, and our people get the full picture of the trade. We’d rather talk pay with you directly than post a number that doesn’t fit your experience.
